Over Toby
Learning a new language can feel daunting, but it doesn't have to be. My name is Toby, and I offer personalised one-on-one English tutoring for primary and secondary school students in Groningen or online to students in the Netherlands.
I am currently studying Law, a degree that demands precision, clarity, and a deep command of the English language. I also completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, a academically rigorous qualification, including English Literature at Higher Level. which gave me a strong foundation in academic writing, critical thinking, and above all, English. I have been working with the language at a high level for years, and I genuinely enjoy helping others find their confidence in it.
What sets my lessons apart is that they are built around you, not a generic textbook. Every student learns differently, and I take the time to understand where you are, what you find tricky, and what actually motivates you, then I build lessons from there. Whether you need help with grammar, want to improve your speaking and pronunciation, or are preparing for a school exam, I will make sure each session is useful, engaging, and tailored to your goals.
I am patient, reliable, and approachable. I will never make you feel embarrassed for not knowing something; that is exactly what we are here to work on together, asking questions and inquiring further are always encouraged. My lessons are relaxed but purposeful, and I take my students' progress seriously.

Teaching techniques and methods
Lessons built around active, hands-on practice rather than passive memorising. The focus is on speaking and pronunciation from day one I encouraged students to talk, make mistakes, and self-correct in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. Each session includes targeted pronunciation drills, vocabulary exercises, and conversational practice. Importantly, every lesson plan is tailored specifically to the individual student: their current level, their school curriculum, and the areas they personally struggle with. No two students get the same lesson.
Typical lesson structure
A session usually begins with a short warm-up a brief conversation or recap of the previous lesson to activate vocabulary and build confidence. This is followed by the main focus of the day, whether that's a grammar concept, a reading comprehension exercise, writing practice, or a speaking activity. The lesson closes with a short review and a simple exercise or task to try before the next session, reinforcing what was covered without overwhelming the student.
Specific skills and qualities
Patience is key lessons move at the student's pace, never rushed. No question is too basic. Im knowledgeable as a law student and IB Diploma graduate who took the Higher level English Literature course, there is a strong command of both formal academic English and natural everyday English. I’m flexible with lesson times, formats (online or in-person), and content can all be adjusted to fit the student's schedule and needs. Furthermore, reliable, consistent, punctual, and committed to the student's progress. Approachable, creating a comfortable environment where students feel confident enough to try, stumble, and improve.
Who the lessons are intended for
Lessons are aimed at primary and secondary school pupils, from roughly ages 8 through to the end of secondary school. On the secondary level, this includes students following VWO and HAVO tracks, covering school English, exam preparation, essay writing, and oral assignments. Whether a student is struggling to keep up, wants to get ahead, or simply needs more speaking practice, lessons can be shaped around exactly what they need.
