With a multicultural background and qualifications obtained in a variety of countries and languages, I enjoy communicating with people from all walks of life and teaching provides this opportunity.
At the term of my master’s degree in Classics, specializing in Latin and Ancient Greek, I hope to become a secondary school teacher and pass on the love of languages which has played a defining role in my life so far. I believe in an active and two-way approach to learning languages, that is to say that the emphasis in my lessons is mainly based on written and spoken practice rather than the revision of dry grammatical rules. While these are doubtlessly important, I feel a student stands to gain more language proficiency from listening, formulating, and erring rather than spending hours on one grammatically perfect sentence.
As such, as far as it is possible, the lesson takes place in total immersion in the target language, and the homework assignments take the form of listening to radio snippets and/or (according to the level) watching TV documentaries/series, with a questionnaire to be filled in order to require active participation. This then leads to a discussion during the lesson (talking is crucial!), the creation of vocabulary lists (these serve as reminders rather than the sources of learning - it is preferable for the student to actively uncover the meaning of words than to simply receive it) and where useful some revision of particularly difficult linguistic cases which appear in the snippet/documentary.
Where the total immersion encounters difficulties, I am able to teach through either English, Dutch, or French.
According to the needs of the student and the level of mastery which is sought, this model can be supplemented.
Thanks to my experience in tutoring and youth movements, as well as my own young age, I have developed good intergenerational communication skills, which facilitates the learning process.
