Over Nicolas
Hi! My name is Nicolas, I'm a thirty-two year old experienced foreign language tutor (French and English) with strong pedagogical and didactic skills, and a kind and engaging personality.
I am native bilingual French-English. I was born in France of American and French parents. I have spent most of my childhood in the United States, and later pursued my studies in France. I hold two bachelor degrees from French universities: the first in visual arts, and in the second in anthropology. More recently, I graduated from a research master's program in social sciences at the University of Amsterdam where I specialised in ecological anthropology.
Alongside my studies, I have always worked as a foreign language teacher in different capacities: first as an English tutor while studying in France; then as a French tutor since I moved to the Netherlands in 2022.
I have also worked as a foreign language teacher in professional settings.
In 2017, I worked as an English and French language instructor with UNHCR in a kurdish refugee in Northern Greece.
From 2018 to 2019, I worked as a 'French as a foreign language' teacher in a French highschool in Mayotte.
From 2022 to 2024, I worked as a French teacher at L'École de Français, in Amsterdam.
Since 2026, I am working as a freelance French tutor in The Hague.
As a trained social scientist, I have a wide and diverse interest in many discussion topics, and I have a deep understanding and attention for social and cultural difference.
Aside from tutoring French, I'm currently working on a comparative ethnographic research project about sourdough bread baking, artificial intelligence and neurodiversity, as well as a several creative writing projects in French and English.

The lessons are tailored to your needs – no matter your age!
Whether you are a high school student with a need to improve your grades, a professional wishing to improve their French in the context of a business endeavour, or preparing a holiday trip to a French-speaking country, I am here to help!
As a native bilingual of French and English, and due to my personal history with both languages, I have strong experiential expertise in the difficulties one may encounter when trying to learn French from English. My teaching method is aimed at creating a relaxed and interactive learning environment while bringing concrete results. In teaching, I always approach the students' needs with care and kindness and adjust my style and explanations to their level to help them feel at ease and confident when learning French.
I also bring in my knowledge of French culture and history to make the substance lively and provide a rich and engaging learning experience!
Depending on your needs, I offer two formats:
1. A structured learning program
2. Guided conversation lessons
1. For a structured learning program, the first lesson is a diagnostic lesson aimed at establishing your objectives, and your linguistic strengths and weaknesses. It starts with a discussion and ends with a global evaluation of your skills in the four linguistic domains: 1. verbal comprehension, 2. verbal expression, 3. written comprehension 4. written expression.
Following the initial diagnostic lesson, I then propose a structured yet flexible learning programme which we can always discuss and fine tune together as we pursue your linguistic trajectory!
The content of the lessons combines a variety of grammar lessons and exercises, using various media clippings and material, games, and accompanied conversations during which I strengthen your vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
2. Guided conversations are more informal lessons during which we chat in French as much as possible. For the first lesson, we dive right into speaking French - but of course, at your own pace before building up gradually! I do not force you speak French, but encourage you in kind ways.
As we chat, I guide you and strengthen your French by sometimes pausing to highlight and explain a grammar point, enrichen your vocabulary, or fine tune your pronunciation.
To lead our conversations, and depending on your personal interests, I like to chose a short media sample (such as a news article, or other), which we both read in advance, to serve as a prompt to our conversations. Of course, this really depends on your personal preference. The aim is for dynamic and lively chats, and that you feel at ease and confident when speaking French. These are key ingredients when learning to speak French!
Lessons can take place at either at your home, or in a public place of your choice (café, library, parc if sunny, etc.).
