In my experience as an English tutor I have taken many approaches, depending on which suited my students and their needs the best. I usually teach 1-2 hour lessons at a time, starting with questions from the student and continuing with previously agreed upon our agenda. For English tutoring I use texts and grammar sheets for exercise, videos and podcasts to improve their listening skills, engage the student in conversation and, in the case where the student aims to pass a particular proficiency exam, targeted practice using exam materials. For Social Sciences I take a practical approach, starting with issues the student needs help with and expanding their knowledge using up-to-date, current world problems and research. I have taught English in private lessons both at my school to younger students and privately, targeting my lessons for middle school and high school students.
