Over Jihyeok

I'm a native Korean speaker studying Economics and Business at Erasmus University Rotterdam, in a dual-degree program with Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul.

Living and studying in the Netherlands has shown me what it's like to be on the other side: trying to follow conversations, guessing at unwritten rules, and feeling a bit lost even when you know the words. That experience is exactly why I enjoy teaching Korean. I want my students to feel comfortable, not judged, and to have fun discovering a culture I'm proud of.

I'm patient, friendly and organised, and I explain things clearly in English. Whether you're curious about Korea, love its music and dramas, or have big plans to live there, I'd be happy to help you get there step by step.

Textbooks teach you the words, but not the context that every Korean understands without thinking. That context is what I focus on. Why does a Korean call an older friend "oppa" or "unni" (big brother / big sister) instead of their name? Why can the polite-sounding "ssi" (like "Mr. /Ms.") actually come across as rude? When should you switch from casual speech to polite speech, and what happens if you get it wrong? These are the things that make you sound natural instead of like a textbook, and you won't find them in an app.
-Vocabulary first: memorizing words is essential, so every lesson includes new vocabulary and a quick check of last week's words
-One real-life situation (meeting a friend's parents, talking to a senior at work, texting a Korean friend)
-How Koreans actually speak in that situation: which title to use, how polite to be, and why
-Practice it in conversation until it feels natural

Who it's for
Complete beginners (no Korean alphabet needed to start), K-drama and K-pop fans who want to understand what's really going on, and anyone planning to study, work or make friends in Korea. As an Erasmus University student myself, I keep lessons flexible, in Rotterdam or online.
