Alicia and I worked together at a nature center and have taught together several times. In my observations, she always shows a tremendous amount of care and respect towards her students. One of her strongest skills is adapting concepts to all different types of learners and different ages. She is very good at breaking complex concepts down for younger learners, and being able to build those concepts back up for older learners to challenge them in an engaging way.

She also is an incredibly patient teacher. She understands that all kids are different and what works for one student may not work for another. I have seen her take a lesson topic (ex: I’ve seen her teach several times about birds of prey and how they hunt) and present it in many different ways (through words, pictures, stories, etc) to make sure each child was able to grasp what she was explaining. Even students who struggled at first were eventually able to get the concepts due to her patience and ability to figure out what each child responds to the best.

We once co-taught an after school club together, and spent an hour each week taking a group of 11 students through various environmental topics. Starting with soil and plants and working our way up to bugs, larger animals and eventually apex predators. Alicia was very skilled in using the topics from every class and pulling them all together to teach our students that we are all connected in the environment, and how energy is transferred through plants and animals in a big food web.

Alicia and I know each other from working together at the same tutoring company. I have been fortunate enough to observe some of her classes and witness her skills firsthand. Alicia is a brilliant tutor. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable about her subject, she is also a very intuitive teacher. She understands how to break down complex mathematical concepts for students. Alicia is very versatile and capable of utilizing a wide variety of teaching strategies and techniques depending on the skill level, knowledge, and individual needs of her students. Her quick thinking and problem solving skills means she is able to adapt and cater to her students' varied needs. I have seen her utilize these skills and qualities on many occasions such as when a student came to class and needed to change what they were working on halfway through the class. Alicia was unfazed and quickly reoriented herself and the student to focus on the new task. I have also seen her adjust seamlessly when she unexpectedly gained a student who came in last minute without prior notice. Alicia quickly and efficiently set her other students to work independently and was able to address the new student in a timely manner. She is phenomenal at building and maintaining reports with students, making them feel comfortable and supported while in her class. I have seen quiet, shy students open up to her due to her encouraging and supportive nature and have seen anxious students relax and become more confident because of her calm demeanor. She is a fantastic addition to any team of tutors and any student would be lucky to have her as their tutor.
