My teaching style is clear, patient, and tailored to each student’s background—whether you are preparing for conservatory entrance exams, studying music academically, or developing your own compositions. My goal is to make complex musical concepts understandable, practical, and musically inspiring.
Music Theory:
This course provides a comprehensive foundation in the principles of Western music. Students study the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and notation, learning how they interact to create cohesive musical structures. Emphasis is placed on developing analytical skills, understanding key signatures and scales. By the end of the course, students will have the tools to read, write, and analyze music with confidence.
Tonal Harmony:
Tonal Harmony focuses on the rules and practices of chord construction, voice leading, harmonic progressions, and modulation within tonal contexts. The course emphasizes four-part writing, functional harmony, and the relationships between melody and accompaniment. Practical exercises in composition and analysis reinforce the understanding of harmonic structures and their expressive potential.
Counterpoint:
In this course, students study contrapuntal techniques through the systematic approach of species counterpoint. Beginning with simple note-against-note writing and progressing through more complex rhythmic interactions, students learn to craft independent melodic lines that adhere to strict rules of consonance and dissonance. The course cultivates precision in melodic motion, intervallic control, and contrapuntal voice interaction, providing a solid foundation for advanced compositional study.
Fugue:
Fugue examines the art of imitative counterpoint, focusing on the composition and analysis of fugues in the style of the Baroque masters. Students study subject development, countersubjects, episodes, stretto, inversion, augmentation, and diminution. The course emphasizes both analytical understanding and practical composition, guiding students in creating structured, coherent, and expressive contrapuntal works.
Orchestration:
Orchestration introduces students to the colors, ranges, and capabilities of the instruments of the orchestra. Topics include instrumental techniques, timbre blending, voicing, and arranging for different ensembles. Students learn to write effectively for strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, while developing an understanding of balance, texture, and expressive potential. Practical exercises and score analysis of masterworks cultivate the ability to produce professional, idiomatic orchestrations.
Lessons are in English or Greek.
