Over Andrew
I have a BMus in Composition from Birmingham Conservatoire and have spent the last decade working as a professional musician across Europe. That combination of formal compositional training and years of practical performing experience shapes how I teach: I'm interested in what works on paper, but I care just as much about what works in the room.
As a performer I've worked across classical, early music, folk, jazz, and a lot of contemporary repertoire, including many world premieres. That means I've spent a significant amount of time learning, rehearsing, and performing new music, and I understand composition from both sides of the manuscript. I know what makes a score easy to read, what's idiomatic for different instruments and voices, and where the gap tends to open up between what a composer imagines and what performers actually deliver.

I can help with a wide range of things, from basic theory and harmony through to advanced composition and arranging projects. Some areas where I'm particularly strong:
Arranging and orchestration. This is probably my best skill as a composer. If you want to learn how to score for an ensemble, adapt an existing piece, or just understand how different instruments and voices combine, I can help with that in detail.
Traditional and contemporary techniques. I'm comfortable teaching tonal harmony, counterpoint, and form, as well as more experimental and contemporary approaches. I studied both, and I think moving between them is part of what makes composition interesting.
Music technology. I'm experienced with DAWs, notation software, and electronic/electroacoustic composition. If you want to learn how to produce your own music, work with samples and synthesis, or combine acoustic writing with electronic elements, I can help with that too. I'm also happy to help you get set up with the tools if you're just starting out.
Early music styles. I have specialist knowledge of medieval and Renaissance composition (I trained as an early music singer at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague), so if you're interested in writing in historical styles or understanding how earlier musical languages work, that's something I can offer that most composition tutors can't.
Music theory at any level, whether you're starting from scratch or preparing for an exam.
Project support. If you're working on a piece and want a second pair of ears, someone to talk through structural decisions with, or help getting unstuck, I'm happy to work that way too.
I teach all levels. Whether you're a beginner exploring composition for the first time or someone further along who wants focused help with a specific skill, we can work out what you need in the first (free) lesson.
