Hi! I’m a TESOL-certified English teacher with more than 5 years of experience in helping foreigners to master the English language. Because of my deep knowledge and passion for teaching, I have taught students from different backgrounds, nationalities, ages, and learning levels. Through the years, I was able to cultivate positive traits and skills such as adaptability, empathy, good communication, and a whole lot of patience. These skills helped me to connect with my students and be a better teacher.
To give you a bit of a background about me, I am from the Philippines and there we have two official languages: Tagalog and English. Of course, I am fluent in Tagalog since it is my mother tongue but growing up, I was also exposed to English a lot. Our medium of instruction in school, the movies I watched, the music I listened to, and even the books I read were all in English. I remember watching TV shows and trying to copy their accent and diction, I listened to our American friends and tried to remember the phrases and idioms they used, and I read books to widen my vocabulary. In short, I immersed myself in the language and that’s how I was able to master it. Obviously, it didn’t happen overnight. It was years and years of practice. Being a non-native English speaker myself, I am definitely aware of the challenges that learning a language poses. It’s not easy but with determination, practice, and tons of patience, it is doable. I started teaching English to foreigners in 2013. Afterward, I got my TESOL Certificate in 2017. At first, my clients were mainly Koreans. Usually, it would be a one-on-one setup but sometimes, I would have small group classes (max. 4 students). After some time, I shifted to online classes where I taught Chinese students. A class normally lasts between 25 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the student’s preference.
My classes were usually with students between the ages of 7-15, but I also had adult clients eager to learn basic English. Hence, for most of my teaching journey, I was used to teaching basic and intermediate English. However, I also have experience teaching Business English to adults.
As for my method of teaching, I adapt to my students’ learnability so I like to use Concept Check Questions (CCQs) to check their understanding. With regard to topics, I focus more on grammar and its application so I put more emphasis on usage over terminology. I try to engage with my students and draw them out so I can help them express themselves better. Furthermore, I like to use keywords and mnemonics when I teach to help students remember things such as sentence patterns, verb tenses, etc.
