Over Pedro
My name is Pedro Arteaga. I am Venezuelan/British. I have a first degree in chemical engineering from a Venezuelan university, and a MSc in Process Analysis and Development from a Aston University, UK, which centred on the use of numerical methods, mathematical modelling and optimisation, and process simulation to chemical processes. My experience is quite wide: I worked in the petrochemical industry in Venezuela and USA, carried our academic research in the UK, and, more recently, I worked for a number of years for an international organisation (OPCW) in The Hague as an international inspector. I have always been enthusiastic about mathematics. During my time at Surrey University, UK, I tutored first year students in Basic Principles and Calculations in Chemical Engineering. I also tutored my own children in Maths and Physics in preparation for their GCSE exams a few years ago. I have always used mathematics as an important tool in my work: modelling the processes that were the subjects of my research, and more recently, working for the OPCW, I developed the mathematical algorithm which is currently in use to select plant sites to be inspected. I also provided training to personal from the member states of the organisation. Now, I have come to my retirement age and, as always, would like to continue making a valuable contribution to the development of the students so that they can improve their results, helping them to become more self-sufficient. I am flexible and can adapt easily to specific needs of the students.

I teach math by gradually teaching the connection that a math problem has with the real world and with previously studied material, using assessments to determine student understanding, and focusing on strategies to solve problems. So, the student learns to analyse, deduce, establish analogies and reinforce rules.
