Over Maris
Hobbies:
I love reading, learning new things, and conversing, among others. I myself have been learning a few languages, such as Dutch, Norwegian, Japanese, and recently German, so I know too well the difficulties of learning a language, and the frustration caused by wanting to express something, but lacking the right words to do it.
My tutoring experiences:
I have tutored kids while I was studying in the university, where I mastered my skills in linguistics and literature. After that, I taught English to Japanese students online. The students were from all walks of life, all ages, and all learning levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced).
My approach:
Every student is different, so I tailor my approach to everyone. First, I gauge your English level and adjust my material and speed accordingly. I also ask your motivation for studying English. Are you learning English to pass an exam, to work at a foreign company, or to be fluent in communicating with friends?
It's also important for me to know if you want to improve a specific skill (listening, speaking, reading, writing, or vocabulary) or if you just want your English to improve in general. While providing variety, I select my materials based on what I observe to be effectively working for you.
At the moment, I prefer to teach conversational English. My experience in learning and teaching languages has taught me that yes, grammar and pronunciation is important, but only in so far as being understood is concerned. It's actually more important to be able to understand what others are trying to communicate and to be able to express yourself effectively, regardless of minor mistakes. That, to me, is what language is all about.

What to expect during the class:
At the moment, my lessons are mainly for improving conversational skills (speaking, listening, and vocabulary). So, if you are looking for someone to help you improve your fluency, to help you express what you want to say, and to better remember words and phrases, then you've come to the right place.
The lessons will be mostly relaxed, you'll feel like you're just talking to a friend. It will not be the traditional classroom style where the teacher talks most of the time and the student only listens. In my class, I will ask you questions, like I'm your nosy neighbor and you will practice conversing as much as you can. I will provide you with corrections and help you express yourself better, so that you will be understood, and so that you can understand others as well.
We will mostly be conversing during the class. Sometimes, I will send you something to read in advance. Sometimes, I will let you write something. It also depends how you want the class to be. I will not dictate how the class will go, I will only guide and help you, because your preferences are actually important in your learning.

Perfect! De eerste les hebben wij online gedaan. De verbinding was niet helemaal perfect, maar de les was duidelijk en leuk om te doen. Heb ook al weer twee woorden geleerd en wil hier zeker mee door gaan.
