Over Tim
I'm a Postdoctoral Fellow at uOttawa. Theoretically I mix (political) philosophy, sociology and anthropology. I move around the Western world exploring cities with high levels of political activism of both the left and the right and I try to understand what drives people.
I'm currently living in the Netherlands where I'm about to comparatively explore the everyday lives of the cosmopolitan elite and the white working class populists. I've just finished a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Vancouver, Canada, where I was exploring what drives anti-oil activists and community organisers. Before that I was doing a PhD in London, exploring how people create solidarity across religious and ethnic differences.
At university (when I wasn't being distracted!), I loved both the slow work of creating an essay, and the adrenaline-fuelled work of prepping for an exam. In the beginning I'd write and memorize whole essays before walking into the exam hall! Later I realised the best method is to be passionate and well-read.

The first thing you'll notice about me is I'm passionate about how ideas can change the world. My first aim as a teacher is to help you find the ideas that inspire you.
But passion alone isn't enough. The next step is to work out how to present your arguments in a way that convinces your lecturers you're a burgeoning critical thinker.
I employ methods from Socrates and, later, Paulo Freire to teach students to make arguments using the epistemology (put simply, what counts as knowledge) most appropriate to their discipline. In philosophy, a solid logical argument is often enough. In sociology, it's about knowing how changes in structures and patterns of behaviour shape individual circumstances. In anthropology it's all about the detail of how communities and individuals cope with the complexity of the world.
We'll have fun. And I'll help prepare you with the critical tools you need to understand this crazy and wonderful world.
