Over Lawrence
Hello all! My name is Lawrence and I am a Writing and Critical Thinking tutor from Wales, in the UK.
I was born and raised in the UK and attended the University of Birmingham for my Bachelor's degree in English Literature, then completed my education with an MA in Literary Studies at the VU Amsteram. I have worked doing PR, marketing, copywriting; anything where impeccable written communication skills are a must-have, and I would love to pass these skills on to you!
I gained experience tutoring the children of friends and colleagues so I am an ideal choice for an after-school or extracurricular tutor, but I also have experience leading learning session with adults.
If you want to sign up for tutoring from me, we will do a trial lesson first where we set out your aims for the teaching, you provide me with the materials you want to go over, and we can get to know each other a bit so I can know exactly what you are looking for as a student. I offer customised teaching per-student to make sure we are achieving all of your goals. If you are satisfied with my offer then we can get started.

Welcome prospective students!
I am offering private lessons in Critical Thinking, Essay Writing and English Literature. My goal is to produce students who can effortlessly understand, dissect and write about all kinds of texts, from the weighty tomes of Chaucer and Shakespeare, Romantics like Shelley and Byron, the Modernism of Woolf, Joyce and James, or any number of contemporary texts. As well as literature I offer teaching on literary theory, looking at writers from Plato and Socrates all the way to Umberto Eco, Foucault and Derrida.
My lessons take two forms:
- You can bring me a text or texts that you have been assigned, for example from the syllabus of a school or university course; or
- You can freely choose texts that interest you, either by suggesting them to me or from a pre-approved list I can send you.
Either way, we will then dive into the historical contexts of each writer, the theoretical and philosophical movements they contributed to, and learn how to apply this knowledge to your thinking and writing about them. If you are expected to produce any writing about these topics - for example essays, dissertations, theses, etc - I also offer multiple rounds of feedback on your writing to ensure that you get the grades you are looking for.
These lessons are targeted at anyone who wants to improve their comprehension, analysis, writing and critical thinking skills. Maybe your child is struggling at school and needs some extra help with their writing, or maybe they're doing really well and need challenging with higher-level ideas. Maybe you want to find more time to read in your own life, and apply the skills you've learned to your own career. All of these are possible!
My lessons can take place either in person (in Den Haag) or on Zoom, generally last an hour per-session, and can be tailored to fit exactly the goals you are aiming for. The only requirement is that you want to learn to think critically and write well!

Specificaties
My general rates are €25/hour, with an additional €5 transport fee per lesson (if teaching in-person, not over Zoom or at my own home). I am not offering bundle deals at the moment but would be willing to discuss price reductions for anyone willing to commit to buying lessons in bulk.
