Over Lucas
Lucas studied horn at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, obtaining his Bachelor’s degree under tutelage of Herman Jeurissen and his Master’s degree with José Sogorb Jover (RCO) and Jasper de Waal. Developing a love for the natural horn, he took up lessons with Teunis van der Zwart and eventually graduated with both instruments as a major.
During his studies, Lucas became skilled with playing a wide variety of music, premiering contemporary works, participating in historically informed performances, and playing well-known works with orchestras such as the Balletorkest, the Metropole Orchestra, Phion, Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht, Philharmonie Zuid-Nederland, and Orkest de Ereprijs. He is also an active member of ‘Capricorno’, a professional horn ensemble founded by Herman Jeurissen.
Alongside his career as a performer, Lucas holds a MA in Musicology from the University of Amsterdam. His research and interests primarily lie at the intersection of historical music and contemporary aesthetics. His thesis, Discursive Resurrections in Early Music Practice, sheds light on the identity and politics behind the role of the composer in historically informed performance practice. Recently, he has become interested in the application of critical theory in music education.

I’ve been teaching students of all ages for the past few years. I value a personal approach to a student’s learning trajectory, identifying challenges along the way while also broadening their musical understanding. Currently, I work as a horn teacher in Arnhem, Nijmegen and Oss, and I'm offering online lessons as well. As a progressional musician, I have played with major orchestras and ensembles in The Netherlands and Germany ranging from classical music orchestras to Early Music ensembles and pop/jazz formations, and I have taken part in multiple album recordings this year.
