Over Freya
Freya began her professional career on the West End stage at the age of 11 with a solo role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Woman in White. She loved singing from an early age, and discovered an interest in Opera and classical singing whilst studying for a degree in Music at The University of Manchester.
Freya successfully auditioned for St Martin-in-the-Fields Choral Scholarship 2017-8, and sang as part of their professional group St Martin’s Voices. Alongside performing, Freya teaches singing to a diverse range of pupils and she has been a supporting artist for Film & TV for many years.
In March 2023, Freya stepped in with only two weeks notice to perform the role Young Heidi in Follies with Harpenden Musical Theatre Company. Freya received a NODA nomination for ‘best performance in a musical’ for this role. She also performed the role of Adele in Die Fledermaus with Harrow Opera in Oct 2022. Her recent roles include Esmerelda in The Bartered Bride with Brent Opera, Jun 2022, and Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera with Harrow Opera, Oct 2021. Freya’s other Opera roles include Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance with MUGSS, Lace Seller in Death in Venice at Endellion Festival, A Novice in Suor Angelica with Lunchbreak Opera, Angelina in Trial by Jury with MUGSS, The Princess of Monte Carlo in The Grand Duke with MUGSS, Damon in Acis & Galetea (scenes) at AIMS, Poppea in The Coronation of Poppea (scenes) and Cunegonde in Candide (scenes) both at University.
As part of Horizon Voices, Freya was a Young Artist performer for the Brighton Early Music Festival 2022-23. As a continuation of that scheme, she is now a Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist. Freya sings as part of the annual St Endellion Summer Festival Chorus, often performing step out roles in their semi-staged Opera’s and showcase concerts. In 2022, she premiered a new solo work by Maddy Aldis-Evans. Freya has been a member of Felici Opera for a number of years and is invited to perform various recitals and concerts throughout the year. Freya was the recipient of a bursary to sing in Masterclasses with Dame Felicity Lott at Dartington Festival 2018, and the previous year attended AIMS singing course.
Freya regularly sings solo services, concerts and performances at St Martin-in-the-fields, London. She has enjoyed performing oratorio solos in Handel’s Messiah, Fauré's Requiem, Haydn’s Creation and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. In St Martin’s annual Christmas musical nativity performance and Easter Passion Drama, Freya performs the role Mary.
She has sung with Philharmonia Chorus and the BBC Daily Service singers, along with other choral groups including Ex Ori Equi, Icosa, Horizon Voices and more.
Whilst at University, Freya turned her artistry and love for acting to directing Opera. Her credits include Acis and Galatea with MUMS, The Mikado with MUGSS and she was assistant director for Mysterious 44, a new opera by Kevin Malone.
Freya thoroughly enjoyed learning to dance as she grew up. She achieved a distinction in Grade 8 Ballet RAD, and high grades in Intermediate Tap ISTD and Advanced 1 Modern ISTD.

Freya began her professional career on the West End stage with a solo role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical ‘The Woman in White’ at the age of 11. She loved singing from a young age and was inspired by musical theatre and classical styles whilst growing up. Freya then pursued a degree in Music at The University of Manchester, discovering a love for choral and opera singing. She has worked as a professional freelance soprano in London alongside working in film & TV as a Background Artist whilst also teaching singing to a wide range of pupils.
Freya enjoyed singing lessons more than anything whilst growing up and now works to inspire the same enthusiasm and joy in her pupils. She draws on both her professional singing experience and seven years teaching to tailor her teaching methods. Freya has taught singing at The Misbourne School, Egerton Rothesay School, Sargent and Plester School of Dance, SDSD and Footlights. For further information, please visit her personal website 'Freya Turton Soprano' .
Teaching in Singing
Freya teaches Classical singing from beginner to advanced and can prepare students for examination with ABRSM and Trinity exam boards. She enters some students into the Chesham Arts Festival singing competition each year which gives them a fantastic opportunity to perform on stage. Some of her pupils are also on the Garsington Youth Opera scheme.
Freya has an expansive knowledge of vocal technique and health which she passes on in her teaching. She is currently studying a Voice Methodology course as part of her Masters Degree. Freya also uses movement and muscle relaxation to focus breathing. Her aim as a singing teacher is to improve a pupil’s sound and confidence in a relaxed and (most importantly) fun environment.
First Lesson
In a first lesson, Freya will get to know your past singing experience and goals by having a relaxed chat. She will also guide you through some simple movement and breathing exercises to begin with, then move on to vocal exercises. You may want to bring a song with you that you've worked on in the past, or something you enjoy singing - it could be what you hum in the shower if you're not sure.
Beginners
All beginners are very welcome. Freya is a friendly and calm teacher who will guide and encourage you through a fun and relaxed lesson. She has worked with many beginners, both children and adults, and very much enjoys observing students build in confidence as lessons progress.
